Hello!  This is a direct message from your humble healthy desk servant, Richard Madigan (I go by Rich).

First of all, I would like to sincerely thank you for visiting Healthy Desk Depot. It is with humility and gratitude that I would like to serve you as someone who is looking to improve your long-term health.  Congratulations and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Read on if you'd like to learn about me (I can't promise it won't be boring though)!

I currently live in Connecticut where I am a father of two teenage sons.  I consider myself a lifelong athlete and certified weekend warrior.  Activities that I love to participate in include long scenic hikes, any form of strength training, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, high-intensity training, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, scuba diving and riding my motorcycle.  I'm always looking to add things to learn, so feel free to make a suggestion to me!

My interest in healthy desks came about as a result of a 20-year Wall Street career.  Having worked many, many, MANY long hours in an office or sitting on a trading desk, I noticed, starting in my early to mid 30s, that little health problems were emerging over time - some creeping weight gain (I was never a six-pack ab guy, but I could always generally maintain my weight), a bit of neck pain, a bit of lower back pain and then, eventually, significant knee pain when I went in to the gym to do my favorite exercise - squats!  After many appointments with physical therapists, doctors and chiropractors, I learned that my hips and hip flexors had become chronically tight to the point that they were clearly atrophying!  Because my hip flexors had shortened and tightened so much, it was pulling my knees out of alignment - hence the knee pain.  The culprit?  Sitting all day!  When my former employer finally invested in standing desks for us, I noticed an immediate improvement in the way I felt throughout the day and in my performance at the gym and on weekends.  I had more energy, I felt more flexible, strong and supple, and I felt my weekend training was no longer being impeded by my office work.

That's why I am so passionate about getting healthy desks into the hands of as many people as I can.  While our careers are certainly important, I strongly believe that life REALLY begins outside the workplace, and there are things we can do to improve our health while we are working.
